Love Is – A Poem For The Tired Mothers Of INSANE Toddlers

Sophie White

As a tired parent of an (adorably) insane toddler, I find myself constantly questioning whether I’m doing this parenting thing right.

Am I doing everything wrong, am I setting him up for a life of crime and unhappiness? Will he hate me? Am I loving him enough? As it’s Mother’s Day, I decided to write a poem that sums up love for me and also to try to put this mothering lark into perspective for myself (and any other mums out there who may not feel 100 percent perfect 100 percent of the time).

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothering heroes out there.

Love Is: a Poem for the Tired Mothers of INSANE Toddlers

Love is patient, love is kind.

Love is gradually losing your mind.

Love is sticky, love is grabby,

Love is not minding the most disgusting nappy.

Love is gentle, love is LOUD,

Love is feeling insanely PROUD.

Love is laughter, love is tears,

Love is calming their little fears.

Love is ‘yes’ and love is ‘NO!’

Love is hugs you don’t want to let go.

Love is tantrums, love is screams,

Love is them smiling even in their dreams.

Love is rice cakes, love is bananas,

Love is little warm bodies in pyjamas.

Love is whispered, love is yelled,

Love is little arms outstretched to be held.

Love starts giant and then love grows,

Love is picking a little person’s nose.

Love is lonely, love is a mess,

Love can be hard we must confess.

Love is frustration and shouting ‘SHIT!’,

Love is not knowing how we did without it.
