Sending your little one to school for the first time is as big a deal for you as it is for them.

It’s probably the first time that you realise your son or daughter is actually growing up and will no longer be a baby anymore.

For one mum, the reality of her child starting school hit her when she went shopping to buy him some bits and bobs.

Nikki Pennington found herself crying next to a total stranger in the middle of a shop.

She took to Facebook to tell people about the moment it all got a bit too much for her. She wrote:

“I went to pick up the twenty-four pack of crayola crayons and my emotions went haywire. I laid the crayons back down in a hurry trying to prolong this trip. Trying to prolong the reality of facing so many emotions.”

“I hurried over to the folder aisle thinking that might be an easier start. After all, what kind of emotions can folders bring up I mean really.”

That’s when Nikki bumped into another mum who was feeling just as bad as she was.

They started chatting and realised both of their kids were going to school for the very first time.

They cried together, talked about memories, hugged and went their separate ways.

In her post Nikki admitted she will have to hold back her tears when her son’s big day comes around.

A lot of you are probably in the same position as Nikki, and are getting your children ready to go to big school next month.

If you are, good luck. If you’re not, just remember it might be you someday.
