They say happiness is a journey, not a destination, but when somewhere has been voted THE happiest place in the world 40 years in a row, surely there must be something truly happy about the destination in question.
And when it comes to the Danes and their happiness, there is one little trick, in particular, we should all be stealing – that will no doubt make all our lives happier too.
Enter “hygge”.
As a Scandinavian myself, hygge can be best described as a feeling, or a state of mind, maybe. It could be having a lovely, cozy time, doing something that is relaxing and enjoyable, together with someone you love. As in, cozying up under blankets for a family movie night, enjoying supper or hot chocolate under twinkling fairy light, or maybe sitting in the garden or on the beach somewhere just watching the stars.
And importantly, hygge isn’t about extravagant plans, or big gestures or something you do only on weekends or holidays; it’s more just about creating time together and enjoying the little things in life. Every day. As in, the things that make you feel all warm and ‘hyggelig’. Which, by the way, happens to be one of my favourite words.
