So they’ve made a Little Tykes car… for grown-ups

Katie Mythen-Lynch

It’s the iconic toy automobile that probably makes at least one appearance in your baby photos, but now you can drive an adult-sized Little Tykes ‘Cozy Coupe’ that’s 100 per cent roadworthy.

The nostalgic red and yellow car, adapted from a Daewoo Matiz, is the brainchild of Oxford’s Attitude Autos, run by brothers Geof and John Bitmead.

The fun-loving pair “wanted to make something fun” and when an associate mentioned that he’d motorised a Cozy Coupé for his son, John was inspired: he was going to make a life-sized road-going version.

“That was to be the new project; John went home that night and drew the plans up, taking it in the following morning to show the crew. It took a little convincing due to the amount of projects already underway but they finally all accepted and the Toytown Coupé concept was born.” says their website.

The finished product took 16 weeks to make. With 5,000 miles on the clock, it’s now for sale on eBay for £21,500 (€29, 290). Speaking about the Toytown Coupé’s condition, the brothers say:

“We have covered over 5,000 miles in the past two years driving around shows and charity events in the UK and, apart from it not being the fastest car on the planet, it has been the most incredible fun with people queuing up to take photos along dual carriageways and highways on every trip. Guaranteed to create smiles wherever it goes!

We have managed to raise a substantial amount of money for children’s charities with the Crazy Coupe so it’s potential in the right hands could be quite phenomenal.”

We can totally see ourselves nipping about town in this. If only it had a boot and… er… a windscreen.
