Study Identifies 7 Factors That Lead to Couples with Kids Breaking Up

HerFamily

A few years ago, a study revealed that a third of couples with young kids end up breaking up. And now, experts have delved deeper to identify the reasons for this somewhat alarming statistic.

Yahoo Parenting reports that researchers surveyed just over 450 separated parents. The average age of the first child at the time of splitting was four years and eight months.

Using the feedback from the couples and comparing it with data of parents who remained together, they compiled a list of seven factors that seemed to lead to the end of the relationships.

They were:

  • Strain of parenthood
  • Stressful conditions
  • Lack of intimacy
  • Insufficient communication
  • Differing personalities and interests
  • No commitment to the relationship
  • Negative effects of addiction

The lead researcher of the study, Malin Hansson, also provided some tips to Yahoo Parenting on how to avoid these pitfalls.

These included communicating; sharing responsibility; showing appreciation; maintaining intimacy; helping each other get ‘me’ time; and counselling.
