Treerific: This week we are celebrating tree love

Find a tree and hug it – this week is ESB Tree Week

Are you looking for a family outing that won’t end in sugar-induced tantrums or tantrum-induced headaches? Bringing them for a run outside is always a good bet. There’s a sense that there’s been a little bit of exercise to justify whatever treats you may indulge in afterwards. It’s also well known that fresh air promotes sleep (well we know this, not so sure if the kids are going along with it).

This week there’s no shortage of fun in the outdoors with ESB Tree Week starting this Sunday with a flurry of activities and events to celebrate the gorgeous trees of our land. The fun kicks off with a commencement to be held in Castletown House & Parklands in Kildare on Sunday 1 March from 1pm. There will be a host of children’s activities and stalls showcasing woodturners and bee-keepers. There will be garden displays and great food on offer, along with music and other entertainment.

Throughout the week, hundreds of events are being held all over the country from guided tours of Wexford’s wind farms to tree-inspired poetry readings, tree-themed music, and tree-themed walks. There’s even a chance to walk through Kildare’s famous Fairy Forest complete with tasty treats and storytellers.

In Dublin, President Michael D. Higgins will be planting an official Presidential tree at Aras an Uachtarain on Tuesday 3 March and the following day there will be a drinks reception along with classical music at the Botanic Garden.

Tree-planting events are taking place at a number of ESB locations during the week, including the Blessington Greenway at Burgage, the Coachford Greenway, Cork and at Carnsore Windfarm, Wexford.

The events are free, visit treecouncil.ie for more information and a full list of events.

ESB Tree Week is a weeklong celebration of trees (1st – 8th March, 2015) which aims to raise awareness of and promote the planting and care of trees while also encouraging individuals, families, communities, schools and businesses to actively organise and engage in tree initiatives at local level.
