You haven’t had fun In the sun ’til you’ve made a DIY rainbow bubble snake

Katie Mythen-Lynch

The sun is finally out and the fabled heatwave is underway. The kids are making inquiries about paddling pools and water guns. What you need is a fun, low-effort outdoor project, and fast.

Enter the Rainbow Bubble Snake. Yes you read that correctly. Get them set up with the essentials and this baby will keep them occupied in the garden for hours.

What you need

An empty plastic water bottle

Duct tape

A spare sock

Food colouring

Washing-up liquid

Here’s how to make one:

1. Cut off the bottom of the water bottle and slide the sock over the bottom part.  Secure with tape or a strong rubber band.

2

2. Pour some washing up liquid into a bowl and gently mix with a cup of water. Dip the sock part of your bubble snake into the bowl, remove, then simply blow into the top of the bottle to produce long, wiggly snakes of bubbles!

3. To amp up the fun, put a drop or two of food colouring on the sock. Then put the kettle on and dig out your book.

NOTE: Ensure younger kids understand the difference between blowing through the bottle and sucking in washing-up liquid… otherwise they’ll end up with a mouthful of bubbles!
