Parents in Ireland are falling in love with names of Irish origin
For years, girl names like Grace and Emily, and boys names, like James and Jack, have always been popular with expectant parents.
Therefore it’s no surprise that from 2022 to 2023, these monikers remained the highest on the Top 100 lists, according to the Central Statistics Office.
These were followed by other popular choices such as Fiadh, Sophie, Lily, Noah, Oisín, and Rían in their respective gender categories.
However, there were five new entrants to the top 100 for boys and three for girls in 2023, which saw several names of Irish origin rising in popularity.
For boys, the name Caelan rose the most, jumping from 108th place to 50th between 2022 and 2023.
Caelan is of Irish origin and is a modern version of the Irish name Caolán which means ‘slender’.
Other risers included monikers like Paddy, Éanna, Dáithí, and Jude.
Meanwhile, for girls, Síofra also had a huge surge in adoration, rising from 157th place in 2022 to 100th in 2023, a jump of 57 places in rank.
This gorgeous name Síofra is also of Irish origin meaning elf or changeling.
Other rising female monikers included Lucia and Cadhla.
In contrast, some of the less frequently used girls’ names registered in 2023 and not included in the top 100 names were Bláithín, Lena, Tillie, Ceola, Líadan, Demi, Miroslava and Fíbí.
For boys, these were Ultán, Marcos, Kobie, Denzel and Ibraheem.
