1. "You're safe here."
Reassure them that school is a safe space and that the teacher is there to look after them.
Also let them know that the teacher can contact you at any point if they need them, letting them know that you're never too far away.
2. "I love you and I know you can do this."
Big up their confidence before they enter the classroom, after all it is a very big step for them.
Let them know that you think they are very brave and that you are proud of them.
3. "I'll be back to pick you up."
Let them firmly know that you are coming back.
Your child's anxiety, especially separation anxiety, will be very high on their first day of school, so make sure they feel secure that you will be back for them in a couple of hours.
4. "That's a hard feeling. Tell me about it."
Always allow your child to express their worries to you so you can both talk through them.
It's important that you let them know that their feelings are valid and that even adults get frightened some times.
5. "What can we do to help you feel better?"
Help them to navigate their feelings by talking through them with them.
If they can't explain what would help them feel better maybe help them a little with suggestions like 'a hug', 'a special trinket or keychain that you can rub when you're nervous' or ' a trip to the park after school'?Explore more on these topics:
