How to survive a cold while looking after the kids

Mums get sick too, you know

Sive O'Brien

You know it’s the season to get sick when the office sounds like a doctor’s waiting room and you’re considering buying a surgical mask just to wear on the bus. With a toddler in crèche three days a week, it’s almost guaranteed I’m going to catch a cold at some point very soon – there’s only so much longer I can dodge her open-mouth, snotty-nose kisses for. When it does happen, I’ll probably spend most of my recovery time at my desk. But for any mums who are trying to take care of children at home while under the weather, here are some ideas to help you (and them) get through it:

Don’t be Super Mum

It’s okay to tell the children that you don’t feel well and can’t play right now. You might feel guilty putting yourself first, but the faster you recover, the faster you can be back at the teddy bear’s picnic.

Employ their help

We’re not talking slave labour, just a helping hand. Children love feeling needed, so ask them to help out with simple things like bringing you cups of water, or putting a blanket over you. They’ll enjoy the responsibility, and you’ll enjoy being looked after.

Ask them to read

Instead of asking them to play quietly on their own, involve them in an activity that allows them to make noise at a lower volume. There’s also the added bonus that they get to practice their reading.

Have quiet time

If nap times are a thing of the past, try ‘quiet time’ instead. It doesn’t quite have the same negative connotation for children, and you might find they end up snoozing. You could even try turning it into a game to see who can stay quiet for the longest – it’s worth a try, anyway.
