Tried and tested sleep tips for babies (we will take all the help we can get)

Amanda Cassidy

Sleeeeep – hands up who is getting some? Not us, anyway, and if you’ve clicked into this piece, chances are you’re a new mama with less-than-satisfactory hours of sleep clocked-up since, oh, FOR-EVA!

Here are a few stellar sleep tips we have learned from our readers over the years:

1. “Invest in loads of those sleeping Gro Bags, it’s a great way to keep your baby at the correct temperature, so they don’t kick off blankets.”

Kate, Cork.

2. “Keep your expectations low, new babies aren’t supposed to sleep, hold them close, do as much skin-t0-skin as you can, don’t expect them to sleep when they are supposed to – and you’ll all be much more relaxed.”

Sarah, Dublin.

3. “Use an App or one of those sleep teddy devices with white noise and heart beat sounds, they love this when they are teeny-tiny, the heartbeat noises are so comforting.”

Alison, Naas.

4. If they are uneasy drifting off, try putting your hand on their tummy to help them feel secure, it’s really simple but totally effective.”

Amanda, Wexford.

5.Always make sure the room provides a peaceful environment for your baby. Their bedroom should be exactly that – a BEDROOM. Not too many distractions, toys, fancy mobiles. It should be a place of sanctuary.”

Niamh, Dublin.

6. “Try a bedtime routine, a bath, dim lighting, winding down, and some kind of routine you do every time, whether it’s a particular song or just softly stroking their face.”

Susan, Tuam.

7. “Don’t force a routine, let them get into their own routine, and then stick to their natural rhythm.”
