Did you know?

Right now, around 470 people in Ireland are living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). And 1 in 5 of us know someone impacted by it. MND is a progressive, life-limiting disease that affects the nerves controlling movement, leaving those diagnosed unable to do the things most of us take for granted.

Families like Tony Ryan and Amanda Lillis know this reality all too well. Tony was diagnosed with MND in his late 40s—shockingly young—and will celebrate his 50th birthday this year while facing challenges that many of us can’t even imagine. But with the support of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA), families like theirs don’t have to face this journey alone.

Help families like Tony and Amanda’s

“MND takes so much away, yet we are determined to make the most of every day.” – Amanda Lillis

As IMNDA marks 40 years of service, the 2025 Drink Tea for MND campaign is more important than ever. This fundraiser is a simple yet powerful way to directly support families impacted by MND—helping to fund vital equipment, care grants, and counselling services.

Tony and Amanda’s journey hasn’t been easy. After a year of tests, uncertainty, and waiting, Tony was diagnosed with MND in April 2022. As a devoted father to four children—Corey (28), Tonieka (25), Zekeisha (17), and Zantianna (12)—he faces daily challenges that most people wouldn’t think twice about.

“For Tony, the hardest part is losing his independence,” Amanda explains. “The IMNDA has been our greatest support. From providing vital equipment to offering emotional reassurance, they’ve been by our side every step of the way. Fundraisers like Drink Tea for MND ensure other families don’t have to face this alone.”

But many struggles remain unseen. Amanda recalls a distressing moment when Tony was refused assistance in a fitting room. “It was humiliating. People don’t always realise the challenges we face daily,” she shares. “That’s why awareness is just as important as fundraising.”
