If you have a family cat, you’ll know all too well that they love a good climb
Where we see Christmas trees, cats see an opportunity – not to mention the intrigue of tinsel, sparkly baubles, and bright lights.
However, this seemingly harmless hobby has the potential to undo all your lovely decorating work.
One woman has done families with felines a service by revealing a clever way of making sure they stay clear of the seasonal focal point.
Olivia Culverr shared a tried-and-tested (and simple) hack that means she can relax knowing her cat Zig stops viewing the tree as a climbing post.
In a clip shared to TikTok, the cat owner explained this was starting to become an issue in her home:
“So we put this up two days ago and immediately Zig got all up in there and was climbing all the way up, so I researched how to stop cats from getting in the tree.
“There were so many people that said to put foil underneath the tree, so basically an entire layer of foil going up, because cats don’t like foil,” she explained.
After putting the suggestion into practice, Olivia gave her verdict.
“When I tell you they have not tried to climb the Christmas tree at all. They’ll still nibble on the sides and they’ll sit under it, but they haven’t tried to climb it at all.
“This is the most amazing hack that I’ve heard of – I love it so much!”

The now-viral post has since brought fellow cat owners from all over who also offered some other tips to keep their pets away from the tree.
“I use sticky lint roller papers, lay them around the tree and they hate getting something stuck to them,” one advised.
“I bought a dog fence from Amazon and put it around the tree,” another suggested.
“I hide tangerine peels in the tree. my cat just hates this and doesn’t go near the tree,” a third wrote.
