Madeleine McCann: Police searching lake prime suspect called ‘paradise’

Kat O'Connor

Madeleine McCann has been missing since May 2007.

Police in Germany will search a remote lake for missing girl Madeleine McCann this morning. German police will lead the investigation following a major breakthrough in the missing person’s case.

Portuguese police will also join German police in the search for missing Maddie. They will begin searching the Algarve reservoir and surrounding areas this morning.

They believe prime suspect Christian Brueckner visited the area frequently. According to The Mirror, he used to call it his “little paradise”.

Police believe Brueckner kidnapped Madeleine McCann in May 2007. They also fear he murdered the young girl and do not expect to find her alive. Brueckner has denied the police’s claims.

Portuguese police issued a statement following the breakthrough.

“In view of the news made public, the Judiciary Police confirms that, regarding the investigation into the disappearance of an English child, which occurred in the Algarve in 2007, steps are still being taken to fully clarify the situation

“Within the scope of international cooperation, in the next few days in the Algarve region, new searches will be carried out, coordinated by the Judiciary Police, at the request of the German Authorities (BKA) and with the presence of the British Authorities.

“Information will be provided in due course on the outcome of the proceedings,” police added.
