Dinner lady fired for giving free food to hungry students

A dinner lady has been fired for handing out free meals to primary school children who had no money.

Colorado kitchen manager Della Curry lost her job at Dakota Valley Elementary School on Friday after serving hot food to hungry students who couldn’t afford to eat.

According to school rules, children who don’t bring lunch money are entitled to a hamburger bun with one slice of cheese and a carton of milk. Understandably, Ms. Curry felt this wasn’t substantial enough to keep a child going through a busy school day so the kindhearted server often ended up paying for meals out of her own pocket.

She told CBS Denver: ‘I had a first grader in front of me, crying, because she doesn’t have enough money for lunch. Yes, I gave her lunch.’

The mother-of-two says she understands why the school fired her, but maintains she would do it all again in a heartbeat.

“I’ll own that I broke the law,” she said. “The law needs to change.”

Ms Curry is due to meet the school board next week.
