Dreaming of a white Christmas? Dream on, says Met Éireann

Trine Jensen-Burke

We are all dreaming of a white Christmas (especially me, being Norwegian, and feeling like there is definitively something missing from my Christmas spirit when it is currently +16 c outside!).

But it looks like Met Éirann just put a stop to our wishes, and delivered a crushing blow about the festive weather this morning.

Speaking on RTÉs Morning Ireland, head of forecasting Gerald Fleming, had the following to say about the Christmas forecast:

“It’s not going to snow this Christmas, no … I think the chances of that are virtually zero.”

Noooooo!

“It really looks like we’re going to stick with this mild flow, it may get a little cooler around Christmas day itself in that we may see a bit of frost on the ground some mornings, but that will be the extent of it. Snow will be a very remote possibility as we look forward now.”

On the other hand, Fleming could promise something: Rain. And lots of it, apparently.

“We have a very wet and very mild spell that we’re in the middle of.” This, according to the expert, means more rain.

“The other side of that means it has been very wet because warm air brings a lot of moisture with it at this time of the year. Already our average December rainfall totals well exceeded at most of our stations, in fact many of them are heading for double the average and it’s only two-thirds through the month.”

Yikes. *Googles prices on flights to Norway…..
