John McAreavey shares heartbreaking thought about Michaela’s murder

Michaela was killed at the age of 27.

John McAreavey has spoken about a heartbreaking aspect of his wife Michaela’s death that has stuck with him since.

John has revealed that he will always wonder if his request for a free upgrade in their hotel in Mauritius had a part to play in Michaela’s murder.

Michaela was tragically killed at the age of 27 while on her honeymoon in Mauritius with John on January 10th, 2011.

The case is yet to be solved despite much investigation, but a new three-part BBC programme investigates her death further.

Journalists Darragh MacIntyre and Allison Morris travel to Mauritius to look into the death and the documentary includes John recalling the moments before and after his late wife’s death.

Speaking in the documentary, he said: “That particular hotel was actually very popular with Irish honeymooners. I guess there was a degree of security in that.

“I always have this habit whenever you go to a hotel you ask about an upgrade.

“I’ve often wondered if I had not requested that would we have been in another room and that something like that couldn’t have happened. Who is to know, who is to know.”

John and Michaela got married just 10 days before she was killed.

In 2012, Avinash Treebhoowon and Sandeep Moonea were charged with the murder but later found not guilty in court.

The two men were acquitted of the murder after only two hours of deliberation.

In April 2022, Moneea was taken back into custody as well as an ex-security guard when the case was re-launched.

He was charged with conspiracy to commit larceny in relation to the McAreaveys’ hotel room.

He had been accused of conspiring to steal a magnetic key card to the room in order to steal from it and denied the charge, with the case against him later being struck out.

Murder In Paradise airs on Monday, April 10th at 10.40 pm on BBC One NI.
