A first-time mum has given birth to the world’s heaviest baby girl, weighing in at a healthy 15lbs.

After a relatively smooth pregnancy, nineteen-year-old Nandini was as surprised as the rest of the world to discover her new arrival would be a record-breaker and potentially the biggest baby girl ever.

Both mother and baby are healthy and expected to go home soon after doctors at the Hassan hospital in Karnataka, India confirmed the 14st teenager was not suffering from gestational diabetes, which is known to increase the chances of giving birth to an excessively large baby.

The infant, who arrived by Caesarean section, weighs twice as much as the average baby and considerably outweighs the previous record-holder, Boston baby Carisa Rusack, who was born weighing 14lb 5oz.

Dr Poornima Manu, who delivered the baby, said: “She came as a big surprise for all of us. The surgery took place for nearly half an hour and it was free of any risk. She is really big and beautiful.

According to local health officer Dr Venkatesh Raju: ‘In my 25 years of experience, I had never seen such a big baby. She is a miracle.

‘I believe she is not only the heaviest baby born in India but the heaviest baby girl ever born in the world.’

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest healthy baby in the world was an Italian boy born to Carmelina Fedele in 1955, weighing in at a hefty 22lb 8oz.
