‘Am I overreacting about this comment my daughter’s teacher made?’

Was this teacher in the wrong and does the mum have a right to be upset?

We all admire our children’s teachers but we can all experience difficult moments during the school days. One mum recently had a conflicting conversation with her daughter’s teacher after she called out her daughter because she’s quiet.

The mum explained that her three-year-old daughter attends preschool for a few hours per week. Her daughter turned one-years-old during the pandemic which means she hasn’t had a lot of time with other children.

“She turned one during the pandemic so being isolated during those years as well as her quieter personality have resulted her in being very shy, especially at school.

“She has recently started coming out of her shell so much more and while we know she’s still quieter at school we’ve gotten good reviews at parent-teacher conferences.

Her mum said the only issue is the fact that she’s shy and doesn’t “go out of her way to start conversations”.

However, the teacher recently made a cruel comment about her shy daughter.

“I just hate to think that this is how my daughter may be being treated”

“Today at pick up my daughter’s teacher was walking out with her and as she gave me the handoff her teacher rolled her eyes and said ‘Good talk’ to my daughter.

“She then looked at me and said ‘Here’s your mute. Good luck’. I was so taken aback, that I didn’t even know how to react.”

Her daughter then asked her what a mute was when she was in the car. She then asked her mum if that’s why her teacher always calls her shy.

“I’ve been so upset all day and am not sure if I’m overreacting or if I should address this.”

“I just hate to think that this is how my daughter may be being treated by her every day at school because I’ve seen that with a little extra encouragement, she will come out of her shell.”

Parents on Reddit agreed that what the teacher said was completely uncalled for.

And we couldn’t agree more. It’s so important to remind children that there is no shame in being shy and everyone is different in their own unique way.
