With Christmas just around the corner, there’s no doubt that many people across Ireland will be taking to the road to get home for the holidays today.

But if you are out about, even if you’re taking a trip into town or calling around to see relatives, you should take extra care.

That’s because another storm, Storm Eva, is set to bring strong winds and wet conditions to parts of the country this afternoon.

Met Éireann has issued a status orange wind warning for Clare, Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Sligo as winds of around 65-80km/h and gusts up to 120km/h are expected this evening. This warning is in place from 1pm until midnight.

A status yellow wind warning has also been issued covering Cavan, Cork, Kerry, Leinster, Leitrim, Limerick, Monaghan, Roscommon, Tipperary and Waterford. In these areas, mean wind speeds will be up to 65km/h with gusts reaching 110km/h. Again, this warning is in place from 1pm until midnight.

In general, today will see a mixture of sunny spells and heavy showers. The winds will become stronger as the day progresses with more rain forecast for this evening. Temperatures will be around 9 to 11 degrees Celsius today but will fall to under 5 degrees Celsius by morning.
