Travel expert issues warning to Irish passport hold holders booking their summer holidays now

While we are in the throes of winter at the moment, you may be dreaming of a sun holiday abroad already.

Before we know it, it will be the summer holidays, and families will descend on our airports for a well-earned (and likely well-needed) break in June and July.

If your family is taking advantage of the flight prices for summer now, this quick and easy check on each household member’s passport is a must.

To avoid any disappointment or panic at the check-in desk, as well as a huge financial burden, one travel expert has issued a reminder before booking that glorious vacation.

“Have you checked the date on your passport?” Ciara Foley of Platinum Travel says in a TikTok clip.

“When you’re booking your holiday, check your passport at the same time.”

This warning comes as some countries outside of the European Union (EU) and overseas require passengers’ passports to be valid for six months after their travel dates.

If a person’s passport does not meet this six-month requirement, they will be denied boarding and flying to their destination.

“That means that if you are getting to the airport and you have already five months on your passport, you could be refused boarding,” Ciara warns.

“So check your passports at the time of the booking and check the regulations of the country you’re going to.”

@platinum_travel You may need 6 months validity depending on where gou are travelling too. The warning comes so that Irish holidaymakers can renew their passports ahead of booking their holidays to ensure they meet their destination entry requirements first.

Meanwhile, for Irish citizens travelling within the European Union, their passport must be valid until their return date.

Each country’s requirements for the entry of Irish citizens can be found on the Department of Foreign Affairs website.
