Navigating TikTok in 2024: A Parent’s guide to keeping their teens safe online

TikTok

In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, it can seem impossible to protect our little ones entirely

Once our kids have access to apps like TikTok, do we ever really know what they’re being exposed to – even with parenting locks activated?

TikTok continues to capture the attention of young users and despite their age limit, some tweens still manage to find a way to create profiles on the video-sharing platform.

As a parent, staying informed about the platform is crucial, so we have five key things you need to know about TikTok in 2024, according to Kid Matters Counselling.

1. Safety First: Privacy updates for young users

TikTok has addressed privacy concerns with updates for users aged 13-15.

Accounts in this age range now default to a “private” setting, limiting interactions to approved followers.

Additionally, videos by users under 16 are restricted for download by default, unless settings are modified.

2. Age Limit: 13 and above, but beware

While TikTok’s minimum age is 13, there are no stringent age verification tools during sign-up.

This lack of verification means that if your child creates an account without your knowledge, they can access explicit content without restrictions.

Keeping a close eye on your child’s digital activities is essential.

3. Parental Controls: A shield for parents

“TikTok’s Family Pairing” feature allows parents to link accounts, giving control over direct messages, screen time limits, and restricted content settings.

Parents receive notifications if settings are altered from their child’s device.

The “Digital Wellbeing” setting adds an extra layer, allowing parents to set time limits and block flagged inappropriate content.

4. Mental Health Impact: A double-edged sword

While TikTok offers socialising and creativity, it can also expose your child to negative comments and reactions.

Regularly posting content may impact self-esteem, body image, and confidence.

As a parent, it’s crucial to address potential mental health concerns arising from negative experiences on the platform.

5. Data Collection Awareness: What TikTok gathers

TikTok, like many other social mediaapps, collects user data and shares it with third-party service providers, business partners, advertisers, and more.

A past concern involved TikTok collecting data even when the app wasn’t in use, such as information from the phone’s clipboard.

Staying informed, updating security settings, and ensuring the latest operating system for your device are key steps to safeguard your child’s information.

In the dynamic world of TikTok, these insights help parents to navigate the platform wisely, ensuring a safer online experience for their children.
