Temple Street: ‘Other people knew non-medical devices were being used’

Minister Donnelly told reporters in New York that it is “clear people knew”.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has confirmed that people were aware of this before news broke earlier this week.

It is understood that the device was used on three children, who underwent spinal surgeries at Temple Street.

According to The Irish Independent, Minister Donnelly said people have been aware of this for years.

“It is clear other people knew non-medical devices were being used. It is very important foremost that people immediately raise a flag.

He told reporters: “We must have a culture that if someone sees something they raise a flag – that would appear to have happened in Children’s Health Ireland (CHI).”

He added: “Professionals should feel safe and secure in making such a report, which did not happen in this case.

Donnelly confirmed that a review will look at why not.

The news comes after parents slated Donnelly for remaining in New York as the crisis unfolds at home.

HerFamily readers said they have lost trust in our healthcare system following the Temple Street scandal.

Others expressed their disappointment in Donnelly’s actions, with others saying it was “criminal”.

One mum told us: “I have no confidence in them at all. It is criminal.”

The HSE confirmed an external review will take place after identifying 19 “serious spinal surgical incidents”.

A UK expert will now review the cases following the internal investigation.

The consultant at the centre of the crisis has reportedly not operated since last August. They have also been suspended from CHI Temple Street since November.

CHI Ireland will contact all patients and their families who are waiting for spinal surgeries.

Anyone with concerns can contact the spinal surgery helpline on 01 409 6117.
