Trine Jensen-Burke

Are you a fan of your flannels? Or more of a silk nightie type when it comes to your bedroom attire?

Apparently, it doesn’t matter in the slightest, because if experts are to be believed, we should all be sleeping in the nip.

Why, you may ask, apart from the fact that you will clearly have that little bit less washing to deal every week?

Well, according to Dr. Alyssa Dweck, co-author of V is for Vagina, letting your neither regions breathe at night is all sorts of good for your health. “I often tell my patients to sleep with no underwear,” Dweck recently explained to Shape. “If the area is constantly covered — especially by a fabric that’s not moisture-wicking or absorbent — moisture collects, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria or yeast.”

Constantly getting yeast infections? Or even just prone to itching and irritation “down there”? Ditch the undies in bed.

Oh, and it’s not just women who should embrace sleeping in the nude. Apparently, men are better off in their birthday suit too.

“Your boxers keep heat and moisture in — and bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments, MD and Atlantic City-based urologist Brian Steixner recently told MensHealth.com. “More bacteria makes for a higher likelihood that any chafed or irritated skin down there becomes infected.”

Yikes.

Oh, and the benefits doesn’t even end there. Need another reason to get your guy to ditch the boxers at night? Tell him that sleeping commando could also be better for him little swimmers.

“Your scrotum needs to be just the right temperature in order to optimize sperm production,”  Steixner explains. “When men sleep in underwear, their testicles can become too warm, thus compromising the quality of their sperm.”

Nude it is, so.
