Jan has given the answer to that question herself, saying both her mother and father were motivated by a need to tell their story - not just to warn others about the dangers of grooming, but to give themselves some sort of peace.
She told Vulture:
"My dad passed away in November, but he was ready for the world to know. He said if his experience can help just one other person avoid making the same mistake, it’s worth it.
"I mean, masturbation is not something to lose your mind over. He felt terrible about doing that."
Here, Jan was referring to the scene where her father admits that he committed sexual acts for 'B' while he was also having sex with Mrs Broberg.
This was right before 'B' decided to abduct Jan and eventually marry her in Mexico.

Jan went on:
"Grooming is a very interesting subject that I think many people do not understand. When you’re in it, when it’s happening to you, you don’t know it.
"It happens slowly all the time. I don’t feel like people really understand how it happens and they just blame my parents. The reality is that my parents were victims too, and this man was just a master manipulator."
Jan also explained that she was actually able to forgive her parents, despite their involvement in her loss of childhood.
She said that a combination of therapy, church, and a programme for abused children helped her to reach that point.
"It’s not running my life," she said. "It’s just that thing over there, and now I’m free to decide what my life is.
"I’m free to determine what’s next. And it really had a very powerful and positive effect on my life."
