You can pick your jaws up off the floor now and uncross your legs – this story may also chase away any broody thoughts you have right now.

An Indian woman has given birth to the country’s heaviest baby, who weighed 14.77 pounds. (That’s over a stone, as in the equivalent of a five-month-old.)

Firdous Khatun (36) gave birth naturally to her baby boy, her ninth child, on Thursday. She was in labour for 15 minutes.

Both mother and baby are said to be doing well although he was having respiratory issues when he was born.

Medical staff will be monitoring him for a few more days but are then hoping to discharge him.

Dr Anjana Gupta, who delivered the child, told reporters: “He is a miracle baby. In my 21 years of experience, I had never seen a newborn as big as him.” (And we’ve never heard of one).

“We could not believe how, despite his big size, he smoothly came out… He is a beautiful baby.”

According to numerous reports, the mother is not diabetic which usually causes the risk of obesity in newborns.

The Guinness Book of Records claims that the heaviest baby born to a healthy mother was a boy weighing 22 pounds 8 ounces. He was born in Italy in September 1955.
