While she did take action, taking away her daughter's phone, grounding her and not allowing her to get her learner's permit on time, the mother didn't feel that her daughter understood just how serious her actions were.
The advice she received from her fellow 'Redditors' was diverse and varied, from telling her the punishment needed to be harsher to blaming the police for not showing her the consequences of her decision.

"Serious chores are the best punishment for serious offences. Do you have a hillside that seriously needs weeded or something similar? Something that will take her several hours. She has to finish that before she gets her phone back," recommended one parent.
Another commented: "The cop didn’t do her any favours. She’s probably thinking well the cops didn’t care why am I in trouble!"
While a third lamented what could have turned into a very serious situation writing: "She could have died, killed someone else, had a permanent record, or even killed the passenger. In my opinion, she got off lightly."
