Offers to foster Baby Maria have poured in from the public

Sophie White

After spending the first few weeks of her life with hospital staff, Maria is now said to be thriving with a new foster family.

The baby girl was found by a couple driving in Rathcoole in the late afternoon of the 8th of May.

At the time that she was found she was covered in a Penneys fleece and a Marks & Spencer bag.

A spokeperson for Clondalkin Garda station, Supt. Brendan Connolly, has explained that the case will be treated with the utmost sensitivity and compassion

“This mother has nothing to fear, we are here to help”

He said that officers are still seeking information about the whereabouts of the baby’s mother. Baby Maria was reasonably well-nourished when she was discovered but was found to be suffering from hypothermia after being exposed to the elements for potentially up to 36 hours.

“We are concerned for the welfare of the mother of this child and are appealing for her to seek immediate medical treatment and to contact us.”

As the situation stands the baby could remain in foster care until she is 18 if her parents are not located as only a biological parent can sign adoption papers.

In the meantime Tulsa, the Child and Family Agency, have confirmed that they have received an outpouring of support and well wishes from members of the public for baby Maria, as well as enquiries about fostering the little girl.

A spokeswoman for Tulsa said:

“Tusla has received dozens of well wishes and generous offers of support for baby Maria from the public.

Concern is mounting for baby Maria’s mother, and gardai have stated that she has nothing to fear if she contacts the authorities.

If anyone has information regarding the infant’s missing mother contact Sgt Maeve O’Sullivan on 01 666 7600, or the Tusla Child and Family Agency on 01 620 6387.
