Root Out The Brollies: Storm Jonas Is On His Way

Trine Jensen-Burke

Spells of heavy rain and unsettled weather on the way as Met Éireann warns we should all be rooting out our umbrellas right about now.

Apparently the balmy conditions we have seen across the country over the last few days are set to come an abrupt stop later on today when Storm Jonas takes hold.

The weekend that just ended saw temperatures across the country many degrees higher than normal for January, but as the wet and windy weather returns tonight, the temperatures are also expected to drop significantly in many areas.

The next 48 hours will see spells of heavy rain move in, and the forecasters are warning about spot flooding in some areas.  Southerly winds will become strong and gusty, and coastal areas will see winds with gale force, especially in exposed parts of the west.

And while Monday evening and Tuesday looks to be especially bad, the weather is expected to stay unsettled for the rest of the week as well.

Storm Jonas, which is responsible for extremely heavy snowfalls and at least 19 deaths in the US, will makes its way to Ireland in the coming days. According to Met Éireann we will not get the snowfall they had to deal with in the US, but are instead to expect significant downpours and very windy weather.

Yikes. We’re with Olaf on this one: Bring back summer!
