4th year student nurses to get pay increase of 12.5%

Laura Grainger

The increase comes after a review of their payment was commissioned last year.

Student nurses who are on their fourth-year internship are to receive a pay increase of around 12.5 per cent.

The increase, proposed by Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, aims to allow students on the 36-week internship to earn around 80 per cent of the starting salary of a qualified nurse, according to The Irish Times.

The Minister is also to propose an extension of the timescale for the payment of an existing €100 weekly pandemic placement allowance for student nurses.

This pandemic payment was initially intended to only run for the 2020/2021 academic year, but will now be extended to the 2021/2022 year.

The new initiatives follow a review of student nurse payments commissioned by the Minister last year.

The review, known as the McHugh report, recommended that the 12.5 per cent increase should be added to the current payment of student nurses (equivalent to an annual salary of €21,749-€22,249 for their 36-week placement).

The increase and extension will cost an estimated €6 million per year.

Student nurses are to protest outside the Dáil today over the delay in publishing the McHugh report.
