Uh-Oh, Katherine Heigl’s Pregnancy Craving Is Causing Quite The Stir

Trine Jensen-Burke

I was pretty virtuous when it came to my eating habits when I was pregnant, and the only thing I can honestly say I truly craved (and had to have almost daily) was Caesar salads – from TGI Friday’s.

As in; salads from nowhere else would do, and so I would literally find myself in TGI’s several times a week gorging on this, which has resulted in that I know feel a little sick at the thought of Caesar salads – that’s how many of them I had. Pregnancy does strange things to a girl.

Anyway, the other thing I had to have every day, was my morning latte. I depend on that morning latte, and have done for as long as I can remember. It is, apart from Zara and Pinterest, I think my only addiction. I can go weeks, months even, without any alcohol, and much as I enjoy a glass of wine, never miss it when I don’t have it. I have never smoked and could even live without chocolate (if I had to), but give up coffee? Forget about it.

And I am not alone – yeah. Mum-of-two and actress Katherine Heigl, who is currently pregnant for the first time, recently revealed admit that not only has caffeine been a lifesaver during her pregnancy, it was also recommended by her doctor.

High five, Katherine’s doctor!

Heigl, who is already a mum to adopted daughters Naleigh, 7, and Adalaide, 4, has been happily sharing the ups and downs of her pregnancy with her fans through her blog, Those Heavenly Days.

It was in a recent post where the actress wrote a list of her favourite things (Lululemon pants, check) that Coffee Gate happened, when Heigl admitted that caffeine is one of her absolute go-tos for this pregnancy.

Oh, the horror! Out came the shamers, with their tales of how terrible coffee is for mum and baby, and how caffeine can lead to super hyper babies with three heads and 16 toes and the inability to reason or listen to their parents. OK, they didn’t say that exactly, but you know what I mean.

The thing is, a little coffee is really not that big of a deal, according to the experts – it is only to be avoided in large quantities. As in; don’t drink a pot of it every day, mamas.

Katherine set the record straight with her readers too, revealing that her OB/GYN had approved of her habit.

“When I expressed concern, my doctor assured me that a cup or two a day was fine but not to overdo it. She told me as long as I wasn’t downing a whole pot, my baby would be just fine.”

The actress, who is expecting a baby boy later this year, added that a cup or two of coffee a day had helped cure her headaches, aided with her sinus issues and helped with water retention.

“I totally get that this remedy may not be for everyone,” she admitted. “I strongly believe that you must use your intuition and instincts when it comes to you and your baby’s health; and, though our doctors are offering their best advice and opinions it’s still up to us to make the final decisions about our bodies.”

Amen. I mean; after giving up sushi, soft cheese and wine, a girl needs her coffee, OK?!
