Scenic Sunday drives around Ireland (you won’t even have to get out of the car to enjoy the views)

Alison Bough

Feel like doing something a little bit different today? Why not blow off some steam in our beautiful Irish countryside and roadtrip the heck out of it (you don’t even have to get out of the car!).

These gorgeous scenic drives are the perfect solution if you’re stuck for places to go:

1. Blustery Burren

Flora and fauna in this otherwordly land on the west coast is famed by botanists for the unique varieties that are only found in this part of Ireland. The crashing waves on one side and the jigsaw of moulded and polished granite is breathtaking. Make sure that you wrap up well in your winter woolies because although the beauty of this part of the country can be appreciated through the window of your mammy wagon, you will definitely want to clamber over the stones and see the real beauty up close and personal for yourself. You’ll find loads of helpful information here.

2. Mayo’s Mullet

Scenery in this part of the Emerald Isle is more beautiful than the rest (definitely not biased by my Mayo heritage), and the salty air blasting in the car window is more invigorating than any seaweed facial. You won’t get a more natural exfoliant than the air from the Atlantic coast belting you in the kisser. The route will transport you back in time as history reveals itself with the ruins of homesteads and tunneled potato formations from the famine era visible on the mountain sides. In this spot nature takes hold and will make the meandering trip worthwhile, even for the youngest family members. Plan your trip here.

3. Dazzling Donegal

Deliberating about the weather forecast often defeats the good vibes a road trip can bring. Donegal is one of those places (like most Irish counties) where guaranteed rain-free days are few and far between. But if you don’t visit Marble Beach in Donegal and see that its white sand, or let a local tell you the folklore surrounding the giant that lived there, you will miss a great story. Find all things Donegal here.

4. Amazing Antrim

If you fell in love with Antrim’s scenic beauty watching Game of Thrones then this is the journey for you. Be entranced by the beauty of the majestic Northern mountains and see for yourself why cinematographers adore this location. Get some help to plan this magical road trip.

5. Wild Wicklow

Mel Gibson whiled away his days off during the filming of ‘Braveheart’ wistfully staring out to an auburn landscape full of deer and speckled rocks. So why not follow in his footsteps, or rather his car tyre tracks. Take your time with this one as there are beautiful photo opportunities along the route with safe places to stop the car and capture some Instagram gold. Find out more.
