Clinics offering the vaccine will be open across the country for the next two days
The HSE has issued a reminder for parents and caregivers about walk-in flu vaccination clinics that will be available nationwide over the next number of days.
Children between the ages of two and 17 will be able to avail of a free nasal flu, without booking an appointment.
From today (December 27th) until Friday (December 29th), 28 walk-in flu vaccination clinics can get their vaccination against the flu, free of charge.
Speaking on the importance of availing of the flu vaccination, Dr Aparna Keegan, Consultant in Public Health Medicine with the HSE’s National Immunisation Office says she would urge all parents and guardians to take advantage of the clinics as an influx of flu cases is expected over the next several weeks.
“We encourage all parents to avail of these walk-in clinics as we expect flu numbers to rise over the coming weeks. With increased socialisation at this time of year the risk of contracting flu becomes greater,” Dr Keegan explained.
“Children are more likely to contract and pass on flu and can become seriously ill as a result. Vaccinating children protects them – and their siblings, parents, grandparents and those who are vulnerable.”
The HSE advises that the flu vaccine is the best protection against the flu.
Symptoms of flu can come on very quickly and can include high temperature, muscle pains, headache, and extreme tiredness.
Other symptoms may include a sudden high temperature of 38 degrees or above, dry cough, sore throat, difficulty sleeping, and loss of appetite.
