This Is How Often You Should Be Washing Your Towels (And The Reason Why Is GROSS)

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Towels are generally used to dry clean skin after a bath or shower, but if you thought this keeps them nice and clean in general, you might be in for a bit of a shock.

The latest advice is that every towel should be washed after a maximum of three uses.

Why? Well. As well as collecting all kind of lovely stuff such as dead skin from our bodies, towels also absorb all manner of nasty from the area around the toilet – we’re talking fecal matter, urine, funghi and a plethora of other germs.

Gah.

Professor Tierno, a microbiologist and pathologist at the New York University School of Medicine, told Tech Insider.

“The idea is to be prudent and to be aware,

A damp towel is growing. If there is odour coming from the towel, wherever there is odour, there are microbes growing so it should be washed.”

To keep your towels spotless, add two cups of white vinegar to the machine and wash them on the hottest setting.
