4 in 5 Irish women are not aware of the signs of ovarian cancer

Kat O'Connor

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Ireland.

Women have been advised to familiarise themselves with the main symptoms of ovarian cancer after a recent study discovered that 80% of females don’t know what they are.

According to research by the INGO, four-fifths of women did not know pelvic pain was a symptom.

51% knew feeling full quickly after eating was another sign, but only 39% knew difficulty eating was a symptom to look out for.

One of the best ways to catch cancer early is to be aware of what to look out for. The symptoms of ovarian cancer include:

  • feeling constantly bloated
  • a swollen stomach
  • discomfort in your stomach/pelvic area
  • feeling full quickly when eating
  • needing to urinate more than usual

Ovarian cancer may be one of the most common cancers in women, but it mainly affects those in their 50s and older.

If you’re concerned about any symptoms don’t hesitate to contact your GP.

According to the Irish Cancer Society, surgery is the main treatment for ovarian cancer. Patients may also undergo chemotherapy or targeted therapies.

The cause is not yet known, but there are many risk factors that can increase a woman’s chance of developing it. These include obesity, age, family history, reproductive history, and fertility treatments.
