Irish water warns households against common Christmas mistake

Pouring grease down the drain can cause havoc!

The holiday season is upon us and the festive cheer is in full swing, so Clean Coasts, in collaboration with Uisce Éireann, is advising people to avoid one thing over the holidays.

They’re asking people to ‘Think Before You Pour’ this Christmas and New Year, to avoid being hit with blocked kitchen pipes.

So, whether you’re indulging in an Irish Coffee or preparing a festive feast, make sure you’re not pouring thick greasy substances down the drain.

Another piece of advice is to ensure all your cooking fats, oils, and greases (FOGs) are collected in a heatproof container, allowed to cool before emptying into a bin. Make sure to be placing them in the general waste or food waste recycling bin if available.

You should dispose of all fats and oils in the bin to avoid any issues.

You can get more information online about the dos and don’ts when it comes to plumbing mistakes on the Think Before You Pour website.

Enjoy the festivities without worrying about blockages in your wastewater pipes, overflows from sewers into homes, businesses, public areas, streams or rivers causing environmental impacts.
