3 Major Mascara Mistakes You Are (Probably) Making

Trine Jensen-Burke

When it comes to the one makeup product many of us claim we cannot leave the house without applying in the morning, mascara tends to ride high in the charts.

And for good reason. Mascara can in an instant make us look prettier, more awake and far more pulled together.

If applied correctly, that is. The problem is that many of us end up with clumped together lashes, no matter how carefully we apply our mascara.

Does this sound like you? Read on to learn what commonly-made mascara mistakes you are probably making – and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: You haven’t upgraded your mascara in ages.

Seriously, when was the last time you actually went out and looked at a few different mascaras and got some advice on what to buy? The thing is, much like with everything else, mascara formulas and wands are being reinvented and upgraded all the time, and the last couple of years have seen some truly amazing releases.

Tip: We went along to the a sneak preview of Lancome’s new and improved Grandiose Extreme Mascara yesterday, and were blown away by the cool Swan-Neck wand, making it so easy to apply your mascara, even in the inner corners of your eye, a spot where normal mascara wand sometimes struggle to reach.

Mistake 2: You’re a wiggler

Many of us make the mistake of wiggling the mascara brush horizontally when applying our mascara, which often makes the base of the lashed clump together. What you should be doing instead, according to the experts, is wiggle and push your lashes up, while also fanning your wand outwards. This will not only lengthen your lashes, but also separate them to avoid any clumping.

Mistake 3: You’re forgetting to use the tip of the brush

So many are not aware that the tip of most mascara brushes is there to help you separate the lashes and prevent clumping. The best thing to do is to ‘go vertical’ because it really lengthens and maximises the curl of your lashes.

Another tip is to look for a mascara that has bristles on the top of the brush, making it easy to “comb” through your lashes for a perfect, clump-free look.

We love Revlon’s Volume + Length Magnified Mascara for this, and the high shine finish really helps amplify the length of your lashes.
