13% of Irish people ‘unable’ to afford healthy food

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Irish families on low incomes are simply unable to afford to buy healthy food, forcing them to choose cheaper, high fat and sugary foods instead, it has been claimed.

As the Government is being asked to spend €1 million next year on tackling the issue of food poverty, the charity Healthy Food for All revealed that there are now 600,000 people living in food poverty in Ireland – an increase of 150,000 between 2010 to 2013.

According to Sinead Keenan of Healthy Food For All, food poverty, defined as the inability to afford or to access a healthy diet due to issues of affordability, accessibility, availability and awareness, is a growing concern.

The latest research reveals that a low-income family would have to spend a quarter of their entire budget to buy healthy food for the week.
