I warned a company I was reviewing products for that my piece would be late due to my daughter's terminal illness. They sent me a personal letter in response.
The letter went on to say that the company cannot "heal the emotional wounds" but that they wanted the family to know that they could "reach out" if they needed to talk to anyone.
The letter can be read in full here, and while many agreed that the letter was an incredible gesture for a company to make, others were skeptical of the message's authenticity.
"Maybe I'm just being a pessimist but my first thought was 'this is how you leverage a positive product review,'" said one person.
"The fact it was written by the company’s PR Specialist makes me a little cynical about it too," added another.
However, others disagreed, saying that the letter had to be sincere.
"As someone who is normally very cynical I find this to be pretty sincere," said one user. "You’d have to be a pretty shitty person to use the terminal illness of a child as leverage."
All of this considered, it's fairly unlikely that somebody would actively use another person's tragedy in order to mildly benefit their own business.
Instead, like the person who shared the letter, maybe we should all just be a bit more positive and thankful that there are still kind and decent people in the world.
It's a nicer way to look at things, really.
