STUDY: How your choice in movie could be making you fat

Does a pint of icecream and The Notebook sound like your idea of a good time?

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Do you always choose The Notebook over Bridesmaids on movie night? Are you a sucker for a proper tear-jerker? Do you also find it difficult to shift those extra pounds?

If so then the culprit could be your preference for sad films. New research has shown that momentary sadness can make us crave high fat, sugary foods in larger quantities.

In fact, a Cornell University team discovered that volunteers who watched the film Love Story ate 28% more popcorn than they did while watching Sweet Home Alabama.

You don’t need to spurn the chick flick forever though; researchers found that emotional eaters were just as likely to eat large volumes of fruit and vegetables instead, so make sure you’ve got some crudite to hand before the opening credits roll.
