This family’s Christmas card went viral – for all the wrong reasons

Trine Jensen-Burke

Ah, the yearly Christmas card. Where everyone dress up in their holiday best and grin at the camera for this year’s festive snap to be shared with friends and family near and far.

Some decide to go down the humorous route with the cards, and while we have seen some absolutely hilarious examples, let’s just say that this family’s attempt at a fun snap turned out to be everything but.

The now-viral picture shows a family of five, where the women and girls are gagged with gaffer tape and have their wrists bound with Christmas lights – underneath the caption “Finally peace on earth!”

Turns out; the world at large does not think Christmas should be about binding and gagging women and girls…

The image was shared on Facebook last Sunday afternoon by Louisiana photographer Hannah Hawkes who took the snap, and was quickly condemned, with people calling it ‘tasteless’ and ‘sexist’. In fact, the feedback got so bad eventually that Facebook decided to remove the offensive image altogether.

Ho ho oh NO.

In fairness, we are pretty sure that this was just an attempt, by the family themselves, to be funny and to make their family and friends laugh. And that despite the father and son doing a thumbs-up, they really love the girlies of the family, but still. Maybe a little tasteless, no?

Meanwhile, Hawkes  got so much hatred sent her way after posting the image, she had to come out and publicly defend it. This message was uploaded to her personal Facebook account this week:

Seriously, though, people, how about next year just putting on a dogdy Christmas jumper and say ‘cheese’ like the rest of us, no?
