UNICEF Says That 69 Million Children Under The Age of 5 Will Die By 2030

A new report from UNICEF has estimated that approximately 69 million children under the age of five will die by 2030, the majority from preventable causes, unless more action is taken.

According to reports, the annual report entitled ‘The State of the World’s Children’ highlights that poverty is an issue that governments, organisations and businesses need to address.

If things are left the way they are, almost 70 million children will die, mostly from preventable causes before they reach their fifth birthday by 2030. Almost half of them will be from sub-Saharan Africa.

While global under-five mortality rates have been more than halved since 1990 and the amount of people living in extreme poverty is almost half than what it was then, 9 out of 10 children in sub-Saharan Africa are living in extreme poverty.

This has a major impact on their life expectancy, their level of malnourishment, their education and their likelihood of child marriage.
