2. A never-ending supply of teabags
You never know when the neighbours will come around and they’ll need at least three cups of tea before they leave. Unless of course you don't mind them talking about you to all their friends and family. If you're okay with that, offer them nothing.

3. A tin of biscuits
As our mams used to say (and now we say) you need to have something in the house to offer the neighbours with their tea. Just make sure to keep the ones you like in the press. High in the press (out of reach of grubby little hands).

4. Hot chocolate
It keeps the kids entertained and gives us at least 15 minutes to ourselves. What shall we do? Perhaps we’ll have a power nap or read a chapter of our book… who are we kidding...obviously we’ll use it to pick the toys up off the floor.

5. Blankets
We have lived in Ireland for many years (more years than we’d like to admit of course) so we know it’s going to get cold. Doesn’t mean we have to though. The more blankets, the better!

6. The RTÉ Guide
How else would we know what’s going to be on the small screen during the colder months and plan our daily viewing? And it’s not like the children can go out and play. God, we miss the summer.

7. At least one sick child
Sure it’s the most wonderful time of the year and a season that kids tend to enjoy but there are also plenty of colds going around. The only solution is to wait it out and hope it doesn’t spread to any other family members (especially himself - man flu is the last thing you need).

8. Every variety of alcohol imaginable
‘Tis the season to be jolly and nothing makes us jollier than a glass (or two) of our favourite tipple. From wine to gin, we have it all, we don’t like to discriminate when it comes to drink.
