“When momma’s unhappy, everyone’s unhappy” (Video)

Sharyn Hayden

I’m a big fan of Jada Pinkett Smith. I was a fan of hers before she married that Mr. Smith because she always managed to nail really strong movie roles for women, she was an awesome singer and she looked so damn cool all the time.

We came across this really interesting series called Red Table Talks which features three generations of women in Jada’s family – herself, her own mum Adrienne and Jada’s daughter Willow.

The concept became so popular as it encourages open conversations between the women in every family on their roles – or perceived roles – as sister, mother, grandmother etc; and allows them a platform to share life lessons and wisdoms with the younger generations.

In this, our favourite clip, Willow begins by asking Jada “How hard is it being a wife and mother?”

We could all talk about that until the cows come home, right?! And even Jada admits herself towards the end of the video that she gave the very long version of the answer!

But it is so important to stress to our younger generations of girls the challenge they may have ahead of them in retaining their own individuality and identity as women, while being busy running around taking care of so many other things besides themselves.

Because even though we know it, we know that in order for us to get through that never-ending list of things to do daily, weekly and monthly, that we need to take care of ourselves – it’s often nice to get a reminder from another strong woman.

Step in, Jada – I could listen to her talk all day long and to sum up the entire chat in one concise sentence, her mum Adrienne put it perfectly;

“What it boils down to is.. when momma’s unhappy, everybody’s unhappy”

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves!
