ASK AN EXPERT: How to Choose the BEST Fabric for Your Home

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Ida Pettersson is a Swedish artist and freelance designer who works with patterns and textile techniques. Having started out as an intern with the company 18 months ago, her fun broccoli pattern “Anniken” is part of IKEA’s extensive fabric library and more of her work is due to hit shelves in the coming year.

“Be inspired by everything around you. I like music and art and going to exhibitions. I sew a lot of my own clothing. Look out for things that catch your eye.

Be daring about using colours and patterns. Choose colours and patterns that you feel comfortable with and use the fabric on a large scale, maybe in curtains. You can also simply hang metre fabrics on the wall, you don’t need to be limited to paintings when it comes to decoration.

When it comes to your walls, pin up a rug, use textiles, be free and use whatever you feel is right for the rooms you’ll be spending the most time in.

I’m not very interested in trends. I enjoy fashion but I’m more interested and influenced by things I enjoy myself and other things around me.

Consider natural materials like silk and linen – true materials. Many of these can bring a beautiful texture to a room. Used as a curtain or window covering, they allow light to filter into a room in a very nice way.

When choosing fabrics for children’s rooms, try not to be entirely limited to washable or very durable fabrics. It will get dirty, your home doesn’t have to be perfect all the time!”

We caught up with Ida Pettersson at IKEA’S annual Democratic Design Day, when journalists from all over the world are invited to Älmhult, the heart of IKEA, for a sneak peek of upcoming collections, products and new design collaborations.
