Finding It Hard To Wind Down At Bedtime? Here Are 5 Top Tips To Try Tonight

Alison Bough

When a hectic day is drawing to a close, it can be difficult to switch off any lingering worries or stress before you hit the hay.

But there are some clever ways to get your zen back before lights out; all you need is a little determination to blitz those thoughts that bother you before bedtime. Here are five tips to try tonight:

1. Carry out a technology cleanse

Removing all televisions, radios, phones and chargers from your bedroom is an investment in a good night’s sleep. Trust me, once you’ve tried it, you’ll never look back – it’ll even improve your sex life. Buy a traditional alarm clock instead of using your phone as a wake-up call device, then leave it to charge downstairs when you retire. Take a good book and little else.

2. Build a nest

There are few things more inviting than a cosy bed packed with comfy pillows and covered in fresh, fragrant linen. Put some effort into making your bedroom an attractive space and you’ll be more likely to go to bed earlier to read or relax, giving you more time to ease into a good night’s sleep.

3. Empty your mind (into a notebook)

A notebook and pen is probably one of the most effective tools for clearing your head before bedtime. Before you get settled, make a note of everything that’s on your mind: tomorrow’s shopping list, that dentist appointment, the blocked drain in the bathroom, that conference call at work…everything! Once it’s all written down you can trust it won’t be forgotten and let it go for a few hours. Add a gratitude list to make sure that you drift off feeling optimistic and positive.

4. Use a herbal remedy

Lavender is well known for having a soothing and relaxing effect on the body and mind. Choose a lavender bath oil and take a warm dip before you turn in, or invest in a lavender pillow spray. Chamomile tea has been used for centuries to calm the mind and promote restful sleep. Pour yourself a large cuppa to sip as you get stuck into a good book.

5. Try this breathing method
