Family day out? Here are 5 great events happening this summer

You will be spoilt for choice.

Brought to you by Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons.

We’re happy to now officially announce that summer is very much HERE!

We know Irish weather is notoriously unreliable, but don’t let that stop you from having a ball with the family this weekend.

Feeling particularly ambitious, why not sneak in cultural education disguised as entertainment? (it’s a bit like hiding veggies in your kids’ dinner).

Welcome to your incredible shared moments of joy – in association with Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons.

1) The National Wax Museum, Dublin: Year Round

Three floors of interactive exhibitions; a maze; climbing wall; cinema wall and an eccentric collection of waxworks that include everything from Star Wars to Father Ted. Kids can explore a tunnel of four worlds; meet The Simpsons or hop on Harry Potter’s nimbus 3000. Irish history is made thrilling with Viking warriors and legendary figures, or descend into the basement for a good fright in the Chamber Of Horrors. Book online with tickets from €15 per adult; €10 for children or a family pass for €39.

2) Westport Food Festival, Mayo: June 23 – 27

Mini chefs and mature foodies alike – come hungry! From seaweed and mushroom foraging, to pizza-making and pop-up restaurants, you chow down on some of the delicious fare on offer at this food festival; then work it off with a bit of kayaking.

3) Sunrise Festival, Brigit’s Garden, Galway: July 29 and 30

Brigit’s Garden hosts the Sunrise Children’s Festival, geared for kids and families in a stunning setting. It’s a celebration of music, creativity, nature and all things magical surrounded by Celtic gardens and woodland. Expect a weekend of live music and theatre; circus, puppet shows, storytelling and food.

4) Rumley’s Open Farm, Cork: Open 7 days a week 11am-6pm

Excellent café fare adds to the appeal of Rumley’s, a 20-acre working farm home to a slew of exotic animals and birds. With indoor and outdoor play areas and everything from camels to meerkats, kids enjoy tractor-drawn trailer rides; a zip line, go-karting; balance bikes; mini-golf; pool table; giant Jenga and Connect 4 games, as well as a baby zone for smallies. Open seven days a week from June, tickets start at €9 with family/seasonal passes also available.

5) Soul Kids @Body & Soul, Ballinlough Castle, Co. Westmeath June 23-25

Families with children up to the age of 12 will adore this addition to the popular creative arts and music festival. Kids have a walled garden to themselves with loads of entertainment while a dedicated family campsite boasts the likes of yoga, hot-water-bottles and storytelling. A family weekend ticket costs €195.
