Eh #seriously? Hashtag is the children’s word of the year

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Still figuring out how to type a # on your new laptop? Well prepare to feel #PastIt: the word hashtag has been announced the children’s word of the year.

When entries to this year’s Radio 2’s 500 Words short story competition were analysed, the word’s (or symbol’s?) popularity among under-13s quickly became clear.

In the 120,421 entries analysed by Oxford University Press, the words hashtag, Snapchat, Instagram and emoji popped up most frequently.

“Children have extended its [#] use from a simple prefix or as a search term for Twitter to an editorial device to add drama or comment.” says Vineeta Gupta of the Oxford University Press.
