14 small things that still surprise me about motherhood

Sive O'Brien

I’ve been a mum for 18 months now. While this may seem like a lifetime to me (in a good way – the BEST way), and I can’t remember life before baby (again, in a good way), it’s just a short time really in the grand scheme of things.

Which is probably why there are SO many things about motherhood that continue to surprise me on a daily basis. Such as…

1. How TERRIFYING cutting a baby’s nails can be.

(Sometimes I let them grow a little bit too long.)

2. The RELIEF when I’ve finished cutting them.

(No blood – HIGH FIVE.)

3. How opinionated other people can be. Even though mum knows best.

(Like you haven’t heard the crap advice a millions time before.)

4. How little crap I am willing to take now that I know best.

5. How difficult it is to do simple things, like take a shower.

6. How nice strangers can be when you have a baby in tow.

(Probably because they know what you’re dealing with.)

7. How emotional I get when someone does something nice for me.

8. How emotional I get ALL THE TIME.

(It’s okay, they’re HAPPY tears.)

9. How much coffee EXCITES me.

10. And wine.

11. How much dirty laundry there is. Always.

(Seriously, where is the bottom of my laundry basket?)

12. My ability to multitask like a PRO.

13. My ability to function after more than a year of no sleep.

(When I say ‘function’…)

14. How I would do ANYTHING to protect this little person who is the reason why I don’t sleep.

(That’s unconditional love right there.)
