7-year-old girl creates comic book to battle negative body image

The creation has also inspired her to read more

When seven-year-old Natalie McGrigg from Florida started to experience self-esteem issues, her mum decided to creatively help her overcome her insecurities.

The pair created The Adventures of Moxie Girl – a comic book about a young girl who hates her hair until she uses a magic shampoo that gives her superpowers, which she uses to save the Jacksonville Public Libraries from being eaten by monsters.

Her mum also hoped that creating the comic would inspire Natalie to read more. Angie Nixon told the New Pittsburgh Courier, “She [Natalie] now realises how powerful and awesome her hair is and that in order for her to write a cool book, she needs to read more books and learn different words.”

The comic, which will be released in June, was one of 530 entries submitted to a crowdfunding festival called One Spark, where Natalie won a $16,000 (€14,700) prize for her creation.
